Studying art history as an undergraduate, Gowin soon thereafter realized that he was "a lousy historian.” At that point, he began to create art. “It was an amazing experience actually to be able to use what I have learned through the liberal arts system and put it into a new format,” he observes.
The UMRB grant helped me develop my artwork so that I could earn a Guggenheim Fellowship in photography.
