As his research continues, Yu hopes to investigate the small proteins that attack pathogens once recognition proteins alert the immune system. This could have a revolutionary effect on human medicine. “Right now we have antibiotics, and they have side effects,” he says. “The anti-microbial peptides are proteins, natural amino acids, and they probably don’t have side effects.”
