A Bump in the Road

As vehicles approach a bridge, the pavement under the tires changes from asphalt to concrete, from a softer to a more rigid structure. As the soil beneath the asphalt settles, Ganesh Thiagarajan explains, it brings portions of the road with it and creates bumps along the bridge approach slab. He is collaborating with the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) and other organizations to find a better, more cost-effective design that will smooth over the bumps on Missouri roadways.
